REVOLUZIONIZING STAINLESS STEEL WELDING

At FIB Technologies, innovation isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a commitment deeply embedded in our DNA. We’re proud to partner with ESAB Welding Products to introduce a groundbreaking development in welding technology: the Integrated Cold Electrode (ICE) system, uniquely adapted for stainless steel. This advancement not only sets us apart in the industry but also aligns with our dedication to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in special welding technologies.

TRANSFORMING TRADITIONAL METHODS

Traditionally, ICE technology has been utilized within the steel industry, achieving remarkable productivity by allowing up to 20kg of material to be welded per hour. This contrasts sharply with older methods, where a single wire could only manage 11 kg per hour. At FIB Technologies, we’ve taken this technology a step further by adapting it to the complex demands of stainless steel welding.

In the past, welding stainless steel required more material for the same outcome, involving complex weld edge preparations and heavy configurations that were not only resource-intensive but also less efficient. Early attempts at automation using robotic systems and double torches were abandoned due to the excessive weight they added to the finished products.

ENSURING COMPLIANCE WITH ESAB’S ICE TECHNOLOGY

Aside from the benefits the technology offers, it’s important to note that implementing ICE technology involves a specific partnership and compliance process, under ESAB’s guidelines:

  • Consultation and approval: The adoption of ICE technology requires consultation with and approval by ESAB to ensure that all equipment and processes meet strict standards and regulations.

  • Certification requirements: Only certified companies may purchase components for ICE. Non-certified entities are not permitted to buy parts or attempt to create their own versions of this technology.

  • Legal and licensing control: Unauthorized use of ICE technology variants can lead to legal consequences. ESAB ensures compliance through a PEK control box that must be reported every three years to renew the license.

BROADENING APPLICATIONS

While the initial applications of our ICE technology were focused on beams for semi-finished products and reactor internals, we are actively exploring its potential for broader applications such as thick tanks, semi-finished products, and other complex fabrications. The ability of ICE to enhance deposition rates without additional heat input makes it an ideal choice for a range of industrial applications, promising significant improvements in productivity and reduction in material use.

INNOVATIVE FEATURES AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

The incorporation of ICE technology not only boosts our operational efficiency but also aligns with sustainable practices by reducing flux consumption by up to 20% and minimizing energy usage. Our use of the Flat Cap Control feature also improves weld quality by producing a flatter, more consistent weld cap, enhancing fatigue resistance and reducing the need for extensive post-weld treatments.

FIB Technologies is not alone in this journey. We are one of the very few companies globally, and the only one in the Netherlands, applying ICE technology to stainless steel. Together we are continually refining the technology, with ESAB’s support being crucial in the initial switch from a dual torch setup to the more efficient ICE system after realizing the weight challenges with the former approach.
